About the Book

The Vietnam War

The fundamental question I ask in this book is why the United States suddenly withdrew from Vietnam. This inquiry might sound like a simple proposition, which would invite a simple answer. However, there is more to the subject of Vietnam than a simple answer could possibly convey. The above question is more complex than it appears. Any misguided answer could be convoluted and might invite erroneous assumptions regarding the real reason that led to the withdrawal decision.

My argument centers on the notion that the United States was forced out of Vietnam. But this book only offers a policy evaluation of the final decision that ended the war. I examine the aforementioned question by looking at two major events. The first event entails the United States Congress’ apparent refusal to approve a request to provide emergency military aid to South Vietnam.

This event appeared to have had several irreversible implications, one of which is the U.S. government’s incapacity to honor its promise to the South Vietnamese regime. The government found itself in the impossibility to provide assistance to South Vietnam, which was necessary for that country’s military.
